Hair Loss in Men and Women

Hair loss and hair thinning are common in both men and women and can be caused by a variety of factors. While almost all men will experience some degree of hair loss or thinning due to age, not all women will experience it to the same extent. Women can also experience hair loss or thinning as a result of chemical processing and coloring. Additionally, a woman’s age can contribute to hair loss and thinning as part of the natural cycle of life, such as menopause. Other reasons for hair loss include alopecia, medications, and cancer treatments. Regardless of the cause, we provide solutions for both men and women experiencing hair loss and/or thinning across all stages of hair growth or lack of growth.

The Three Stages of Hair Growth

PHASE 1 – Anagen (Growing Phase)

During the anagen phase, hair is actively growing and the cells in the hair root are multiplying rapidly. New hair is formed below the surface of the skin, pushing out old hairs and causing normal shedding. On average, individuals lose about 100 strands of hair per day. Each new hair on the scalp should remain in the anagen phase for three to ten years.

PHASE 2 – Catagen (Transition Phase)

The catagen phase lasts for two to three weeks and serves as the transitional period between active growth and rest. The lower portion of the hair follicle regresses and hair growth stops. Only about 3% of hair should be in the catagen phase at any given time.

PHASE 3 – Telogen (Resting Phase)

Telogen hairs are fully grown and no longer have the potential to grow further. However, the follicles still retain their growth potential. If more than 8% of the hairs on the head are in the telogen phase, it indicates an imbalance in the hair growth cycle at the follicular level.

Preventing Hair Loss in Men and Women
You can take steps to prevent certain forms of hair loss by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and giving your hair some tender loving care. Reducing stress, following a balanced diet, and avoiding medications that cause hair loss can help. Additionally, preventing hair loss from fungus can be achieved by not sharing combs, brushes, or hats with others.
